Lois S. Van Ewijk, 63, of San Diego passed away on January 7th. She was born at New Rochelle (Fort Slocum), New York on July 6, 1941 to Walter J. and Evelyn (Grier) Skelly, and has resided in San Diego since 1967 where her parents then lived.

Her father was an Infantry battalion commander in Italy during World War II. As an 'Army Brat', Lois attended fourteen schools in four countries before enrolling at Georgia Tech in 1959, as the first woman admitted to the Applied Mathematics curriculum.

From 1961 to 2004 she worked as a Computer Programmer and Information Technology Consultant. Principal employers here were SeminarSource.com, Data/Ware, Great American Savings, Imperial Corp., and California 1st Bank (now Union Bank).

Lois held a Certificate in Data Processing from the Data Processing Management Association. She served as a board member and officer in the DPMA and as a board member of Women in Data Processing.

Lois is survived by her husband, Rudolf J. Van Ewijk; brother, Patrick G. Skelly of Pocasset, Massachusetts; aunts Dorothy Grier of La Jolla, Catherine Shaw of Sun City, Arizona, Eleanor Skelly of Brooklyn, New York; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

As an animal lover Lois was a supportive member of the Zoological Society of San Diego for many years.

Lois' battle with cancer came after losing her home in the Cedar Fires, then losing an aunt for whom she had provided much support. Always upbeat, always willing to help others, very unselfish, she will be deeply missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the El Camino Sorrento Valley Chapel, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego CA 92121.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Zoological Society of San Diego, 2920 Zoo Drive, San Diego CA 92103.
